Rambunctious Good Fun
Rambunctious good fun on the water today. 4.5 was the call, very powered up, on the edge sailing. The wind was much more consistent today, no drastic drops from 25 mph to 15 mph like the last few days. Some occasional good sets of big smooth rolling ocean swell on the outside made for some good 3D waterpark terrain action. Carve down a swell, bottom turn, power up to the top and get an off the lip. Well, not really a lip since they weren't breaking, but still, good fun. Also some more good ramps rolling in over the reef for some nice air action. There may not be much in the way of breaking waves in Maui in the summer, but the sailing can still be good fun. Sounds like the winds may drop off the next couple of days for the racers and the weekend crowd.

Hello,
I'm a 30 year old windsurfer trained as an architect. Do you have any advice for me as far as finding a cheap place to live or how to find a job doing anything not only architecture related stuff? I would be happy doing anything construction related as well. I know this is not what your blog is for but I'm trying to put out as many feelers as I can to try and make my move run smoother. Thanks

Gus,
I"m not sure what the market is here for architects. However there is a fair amount of construction and remodeling going on, so it would make sense that there is a demand for architects, although I don't know if that demand is being met already or not.
There are lots of jobs out there, it's just that most are fairly low-paying service and tourism jobs.
For me the key to making it work here has been to have absolutely no debt, low expenses, a good cushion of savings and live simply and for work, I've got a few mainland clients with whom I work remotely. I'm not making a fortune but I'm making enough to get by and have a fair amount of freedom to sail.
Buying a home here is outrageous. Unless you have a lot of equity in a hot market like California you'll have a tough time. Rentals aren't too bad in my opinion though.
Gas is expensive also, but the much touted expense of food here is mostly BS in my opinion. Go to Costco, look for sales at Safeway and you can eat as cheap as on the mainland - or cheaper.
My advice would be to come over on a scouting trip - not a windsurfing vacation. Come over and spend most of your time looking at the job market, the housing market etc. Subscribe to the Maui News so you can get a feel for prices and jobs and local issues. Start cutting back on your expenses now while on the mainland to get used to it. Simplify. I think if you really want to live and windsurf on Maui that't the key. Simplify, consume less.
Hope that helps. Feel free to email me with follow-up questions at makani24nospam@hawaii.rr.com. (Take out the "nospam" in the email address - that's just an attempt to fool the email harvesters).
Makani
