Maui Windsurfing Blog

Wind today on Maui pretty much sucked. Around noon it looked like winter had set in at Kanaha, gray, cool north wind, squalls marching through. No waves though. After the squalls passed the wind tanked completely for awhile. It built later into the mid 5 range but was pretty onshore.

Other than that, the wind the last few days has been pretty typical summer sailing. Flat water, mid- to upper-20s mph and lots and lots of people on the water.

  • You've made several comments regarding the crowds at Kanaha; how crowded is it? Are there problems with parking?

  • Hard to say how many people, but there are times when parking is a problem, especially on weekends and holidays.

The parking lot and park are mostly what's crowded. Summer is high season for visiting windsurfers so there's lots of windsurfers. Also, kids are out of school and there seems to be a real resurgence of Maui's windsurfing parents getting their kids into it, so there's lots and lots of kids. Finally, Kanaha is also popular with the local non-windsurfers for picnicing and BBQing. So, lots of them on weekends.

On the water isn't too bad if you get upwind or downwind from the main launch area at Uppers. More crowded on the water than I like with all the local racers out practicing plus all the kids and tourists, but it's still not as bad as the crowds at the Gorge.

It just seems noticeably more crowded this summer than last summer and versus fall, spring and winter - guess that's why I keep mentioning it.
